Specified to your stage.

You've seen what each drape does - now the cloth that makes it. The right fabric turns a shape into a look: a rich front-of-house curtain, masking that vanishes under light, or a gauze that shifts from solid to sheer. Pick a fabric to see the look it gives you.

What do IFR / DFR / NDFR mean?

FR ratings, defined once: IFR is built into the fibre and is permanent. DFR is a durable treatment that survives wash cycles before retreatment. NDFR is a surface coat that degrades with moisture. We explain the ratings here.

Velvet / Velour · IFR

The one the audience sees.

The front-of-house cloth: deep nap, full colour, and the weight to hang in clean folds, so it reads as a show before a light moves. Where wool serge is built to disappear, velvet is built to be looked at - spec it for house curtains, valances and swags, not for masking. Inherent grades hold their FR for the life of the fibre; some velours are treated, so we confirm the rating on the colour you pick.

Wool Serge · IFR

The masking that vanishes.

Matte, dense and non-reflective - wool serge soaks up stray light instead of bouncing it back, so legs and borders read as true black from the seats. It's the workhorse where velvet would be wasted: masking, travellers, blacks and hall division. IFR by nature, so the rating never lapses. Heavier than molton, and dry-clean only.

Turo Molton · NDFR

The value black, three metres wide.

Brushed cotton on a 3.0m roll - the wide width cuts seam count on tall drops and keeps the cost down on black-box, studio and short-life builds. Lighter than wool serge and well suited to dry, indoor spaces. Its NDFR rating is a surface treatment, so allow for scheduled retreatment - a service we handle in-house.

Sharkstooth · IFR or treated

The reveal workhorse.

Open diamond mesh: fine enough to read as a solid painted surface when lit from the front, open enough to go around 70% transparent when the light moves behind it. This is the cloth that lands a scene-change reveal on a lighting cue. Woven wide, so broad drops hang with no seam, with an optional sewn-in S Wave heading for a precise, repeatable wave on bump-in.

Voile / Sheer · Fine gauze

Soft light, haze and projection.

The finest, lightest end of the range. Voile is a softer, hazier gauze than sharkstooth, around 85% transparent back-lit - spec it for soft-light scenes, ghost and dream effects, and projection surfaces where partial transparency is part of the design. Sheer is the most translucent weave we make, for atmospheric depth layers where the audience reads straight through the cloth. Both are made-to-measure and engineered to take a clean wash of light without hot-spotting.

No standard drops. Every cloth here is cut and sewn to your fly-bar dimensions, hemmed and weighted to your venue's chain weight - bring us drawings or measurements and we handle the rest. Bespoke manufacture is flame retarded to AS 1530 standards, hire stock is made with FR fabrics which meet the same standards, and compliance documentation is supplied on every supply. Specialty fabrics on request. Not sure which cloth the job needs? Tell the Drape Selector the job and it specs the right fabric.

A scrim (sharkstooth or voile) is a mesh or gauze fabric used for lighting effects - it reads opaque when lit from the front, transparent when lit from behind. A cyclorama is a solid, curved or flat backdrop used for sky effects, large-format projection, and studio backgrounds. Both manufactured in-house and available to hire.
